In
this article I will show you how you can quickly sort and search
for things (files, folders etc) within Windows Explorer.
If you know how to sort the contents of a column within Windows
Explorer, you will much more easily be able to locate what you
are looking for.
Firstly
let's clear up a few terms.
Windows Explorer.
Windows
Explorer is the tool Microsoft have supplied within Windows since
Windows 95.
The easiest way to start Windows Explorer is to place your mouse
cursor over the Start button and then click the right hand button
on your mouse.
Once
you do this, a small list of options will appear. One of these
options will be titled 'Explore'. Clicking this option will open
Windows Explorer.
From
time to time in this article I may refer to Windows Explorer simply
as Explorer.
Column
A
column within Windows Explorer displays attributes of a file or
folder. An attribute is information such as the size of the file
in kilobytes, the date the file or folder was last accessed or
modified and so on.
Some
columns list the names of files, other columns may display the
files size and another column may show the date and time of when
the file was last accessed or modified.
The following picture shows Windows Explorer with its' columns
pointed out.

How
to Sort and Search
Once
you know how to use the columns within Explorer to sort and search,
you will discover just how much more useful Windows Explorer is.
Select the Correct View
The
very first thing you have to do, is to make Windows Explorer display
the contents of whatever is selected in the left hand pane appear
in columns in the right hand pane.
But
what's the left hand and right hand pane? Below is picture of
Windows Explorer with the left and right hand panes identified
- remember, we're using Windows, and what do windows consist of?
That's right, Panes.

Explorer's
left and right hand panes.
