Spam
and How to Deal with it Easily. -
part 3 of 3

So
How Can You Limit the amount of Spam you Receive?
Here
are a few tips that may help reduce the amount of spam you receive.
*
Never use your main email address when you sign up for free newsletters
or to receive free gifts or news alerts etc. These types of services
are reknowned for being one of the main ways your email address
ends up in the hands of spammers.
*
Don't sign up for newsletters in HTML format, choose text instead.
It is possible for HTML email to contain code (very small computer
programs) that can initiate viruses, automatically download things
and alter settings on your computer without your consent. However
with the increased use of anti virus software programs these days,
HTML email doesn't pose as much of a threat as it used to.
*
Don't allow images (pictures, graphics etc) to be downloaded.
Spammers are pretty clever and one way that they determine if
an email address is valid is to monitor when an email message
they sent, accesses the images contained within the email. Once
the image is accessed, they then kno that their email has been
read and that the email address is valid.
Disabling
the auto preview function within your email client will stop these
images being downloaded.
*
Don't use the 'unsubscribe' option contained within the spam mail.
What you're actually doing once you use this option to unsubscribe
is you are telling the spammer that you exist and that your email
address is valid. They will then use your email address to send
you even more spam.
Staying
safe with Email
Here's
a quick list of things you can do to stay safe with your email.
*
Disable the auto preview option within your email client.
* Create an inbox rule that redirects email you don't want straight
into your deleted items / trash can folder.
* Instantly delete any email from people you don't know or businesses
you've never contacted.
* NEVER open an email attachment from someone you don't know
* Make use of any spam filtering options that are available to
you. Most of the free internet based email services like Hotmail
and Yahoo have fairly powerful spam filters.
