Learn
the Basics. Your Computer.
by Matt Western.
In
this multi part article I will explain to you the basic components
of your Computer. I will also try and clear up some of the terminology
used that describes various components of your computer.
This
article is not intened to be detailed ot technical. It is just
meant to offer you an introduction to the topic being discussed.
The
Mouse
Why
was it called a mouse? Well take a look at a traditional mouse.
They were and some still are white, they fit in your hand, and
they have a cord sticking out of one end.
They
not only look like mice, they sound like mice.
And
no, in the computer world, we don't call more than one mouse,
mouses, we call them mice. Don't laugh, when mice first became
popular people did call them mouses!
So
onto our mouse autopsy.
Here's
a typical mouse.

Left
Hand Button
Of
all the parts on a mouse, the left hand button gets the most work.
The
left hand button is used to select items and locate the mouse
cursor from spot to.
For
example, to move your mouse cursor from
HERE
..... to ..... HERE you would use the left hand button on the
mouse.
Right
Hand Button
The
right hand mouse button is used to activate any menus that are
available from whatever you click on.
For
example, click the right hand button of your mouse HERE
Did
you see a list of options pop up? That's what the right hand button
does. To select one of those options you click the left hand mouse
button.
Scroll
Wheel
The
scroll wheel allows you to move whatever you looking at, web page,
document, or anything that scrolls up and down on your computer
screen without having to move over to the scroll bars on the right
hand side.
You
simply roll the scroll wheel up or down.
Left
Click and Right Click
From
time to time you will hear people say "left click on that"
or "right click on this".
This
simply refers to which mouse button you should use.
Left
click means click on something using the left hand mouse button
and right click means use the right hand mouse button.
More
Buttons More Wheels
You
can purchase mice that have more that the 2 buttons and 1 wheel
as illustrated in this article. These additional wheels and buttons
allow you to assign tasks or functions to the additional buttons
and wheels.
Optical
or Trackball
Mice
first used trackballs as a way in which to track and navigate
where they were. The downside with trackballs is that they deteriorate
and become unreliable after a period of time. They also do not
work too well on uneven or dirty surfaces.
Optical
mice are now the rage of the age. These mice are much more accurate
are faster, more durable and work more reliably on less that ideal
surfaces.
I
hope you have found this brief article on mice useful.
